Lately, I've been really drawn to artwork featuring inspiring quotes and words. Especially those cute pennant-style banners you can find online. Since my bathroom was still lacking in decor (though this one isn't going there), I started eyeing up new ways to jazz up my walls. That's when I decided to try making my own DIY pennant banner. Even though I can't sew, I thought it might be doable.
I figured making my own would be cheaper and let me pick exactly what I wanted for the design. Plus, I love having unique pieces on my walls that I've made myself, like my heart collage. If you're interested in giving this a shot, here's how I put together a no-sew pennant banner:
Supplies:
-Square of burlap or canvas (at least one inch bigger than your desired banner size)
-Dowel rod
-Stick-on felt letters
-Hem tape
-String/twine
Tools:
-Scissors
-Ruler
-Iron
Step 1: Decide how big you want your banner to be and measure out your material, adding an extra half-inch on each side for a total of one inch larger than your final banner size. Then cut it to size.
Step 2: Flip your material over and apply hem tape along the edges. Iron one side at a time until all edges are sealed. For the sides and bottom, place the hem tape as close to the edge as possible, fold it over, and press flat. For the top, leave about two inches of space to create a "pocket" for your dowel rod to slide into. In my case, I used an old Ikea pillowcase with straps on one side, so I skipped creating a pocket and just used the straps.
Step 3: Turn your banner back over and lay out your felt letters at the top. Use a ruler to ensure they're centered and straight. Start by attaching the middle letters first, working outward to keep everything even.
Step 4: Cut your dowel rod to extend slightly beyond the edges of your banner. Slide it into the pocket you created, or if you used straps like me, loop them and secure with safety pins before inserting the dowel.
Step 5: I initially bought leather strips to hang the banner but ended up using some twine I had lying around instead. Tie the twine to one end of the dowel, measure how low you want the banner to hang, and cut accordingly. Tie the other end and hang it up!
I absolutely adore the playful touch this gives to our space, and it was surprisingly easy to make! After gathering most of the supplies I already had at home, it took me less than an hour to finish. Now that I've completed one, I keep thinking of other phrases or designs I'd like to try. The possibilities feel endless—different fabrics, custom-painted banners, or even experimenting with embroidery. It's funny how long I waited to tackle this project because I thought I couldn't sew. But once I found a workaround, it turned out to be super simple!
