Yuan Longping's "Hybrid Rice" shocked the world

“The people regard food as the heaven.” How can we address the contradiction between a growing global population and the decreasing amount of arable land due to industrialization? This issue, which has long been a "sky-high" challenge for China and the world, constantly reminds us of the importance of food security. It is a global concern that demands continuous innovation and effort.

The issue of food is deeply connected with human survival and well-being. Many agricultural scientists around the world have dedicated their lives to solving this problem. In 1973, Yuan Longping, a Chinese scientist, introduced the world to "hybrid rice," an innovative solution that revolutionized agriculture. This achievement marked a significant milestone in history, helping China—where per capita arable land is limited—solve its own food crisis while making substantial contributions to the global food supply.

In 1998, the Hunan Sida Asset Appraisal Office evaluated Yuan Longping’s brand value at 10 billion yuan, highlighting his immense impact on agriculture and society.

The journey toward hybrid rice was long and full of challenges. It was driven by Yuan Longping's relentless efforts and his belief in the phrase "targeting 900 kg per mu." He faced criticism for exploring uncharted territory in genetics and chromosomal theories, endured years of disappointing experiments, and even had his research destroyed. Yet, he persisted, eventually discovering six natural male sterile rice plants after examining over 140,000 samples. His breakthroughs were not only scientific but also a testament to perseverance and vision.

Yuan Longping once said, “Scientific research does not ask for birth; everyone is equal before science.” His work reflects a deep commitment to questioning, innovating, and pushing boundaries. Despite setbacks, he never gave up, and his passion for agriculture continues to inspire generations.

Glossary

Hybrid Rice: Hybrid rice is a new type of rice produced by crossing two genetically distinct varieties. The first generation of this hybrid exhibits superior traits such as higher yield, better adaptability, and improved economic value, known as the hybrid advantage.

Super Rice: Also known as high-yield rice, super rice is developed through advanced breeding techniques that enhance yield potential, disease resistance, and grain quality. Unlike traditional rice, it combines conventional methods with modern biotechnology to achieve remarkable results.

International Recognition: Yuan Longping’s work has received global praise. He has helped reduce hunger, increased food production, and provided China with critical time to combat poverty. His achievements have been described as defeating the threat of hunger and leading the world toward a more secure future.

Yuan Longping once showed reporters a giant photo of hybrid rice, saying, “Look at this ear of rice—it’s like Niagara Falls!” His passion for the field is evident in every step he takes. At 76, he continues his research, driven by two major goals: completing the third phase of super rice development and spreading hybrid rice worldwide to benefit humanity.

Despite the challenges, Yuan Longping remains optimistic. He dreams of a future where rice yields reach 900 kg per mu, and even imagines a “waterfall rice” field where the ears are as large as peanuts. His vision is not just a dream—it is a goal he continues to pursue with unwavering determination.
