The winter and spring potato film mulching cultivation has become a new and highly efficient farming method in the Jianghan Plain in recent years. This technique is typically sown in mid-February and harvested between late May and early June. The yield per mu can reach over 2000kg, and at this time, eggplant and melon vegetables are not yet widely available on the market, making the price around 1.2 yuan/kg. As a result, this system offers significant economic returns. Most of the potato growth period occurs during winter, which simplifies management and makes it ideal for intercropping with other crops in the region.
First, plowing the soil before winter and applying organic fertilizer as base fertilizer is essential. Choose sandy soils suitable for potato growth. After harvesting rice or cotton, perform deep tillage 2-3 times. In mid to early January, apply 2000–3000kg of ash or compost per acre to improve soil structure and looseness. By the end of January and early February, create furrows 1–1.2m wide (about 30cm in width). Place 40kg of compound fertilizer per acre into the central furrow.
Second, use high-quality seeds and ensure good germination. Select early-maturing potato varieties like Hubei No. 1, Chuanxiongzao, or Nanzhong 552 to avoid high-temperature-induced tuber issues. 15–20 days before planting, cut seed potatoes (50g or more) or use whole ones (20–30g), and soak them in a 1–2mg/L gibberellin solution for 5–10 minutes. After treatment, cover the seeds with damp river sand or straw in a greenhouse, maintaining a temperature of 18–20°C and 70% humidity. After about 10 days, shoots will begin to emerge, promoting strong, green sprouts.
Third, sow at the right time and plant densely. Before planting, build raised beds 20cm wide on both sides of each row, with a height of 30cm. Then make shallow furrows 10cm deep on the bed. Place the germinated seed potatoes in the furrows, spacing them 20cm apart, resulting in approximately 7000 plants per mu. Use 150–200kg of seed per mu. Cover the seeds with fine soil and then lay a 1m-wide plastic film, securing it tightly. At the time of sowing, temperatures are still low, so root development is slow. By early March, the potatoes begin to emerge.
Fourth, manage fertilization and hilling. After emergence, apply diluted human manure 1–2 times. By mid-April, when the plants enter the tuber formation stage, apply additional fertilizer. Each mu requires 2000kg of manure and 10kg of compound fertilizer, or bury fertilizer between the rows. Plastic film helps retain moisture, but during the tuber growth phase (mid-April to mid-May), irrigation may be needed if there's a drought. Water levels should not exceed half the depth of the furrow. During the vegetative growth stage, regular soil cultivation is important—removing weeds under the film and encouraging more tubers to form underground. This prevents tubers from emerging above ground, turning into stems, or being exposed to light and turning green, which reduces quality and yield.
Fifth, harvest at the right time. Harvesting usually takes place in mid to late May, and the timing can be adjusted based on market demand and crop condition.
Six, two common intercropping models:
1. **Potato + Watermelon + Late Rice**: Plant potatoes in rows spaced 1–1.2m apart, leaving space for watermelons. In early April, transplant watermelon seedlings into the empty spaces. By mid-July, after potato harvest, plant late rice in the same area.
2. **Potato + Hybrid Cotton**: Sow potatoes in 2m-wide beds, with 1.7m of surface width. Broadcast one row of potatoes on each side. Transplant hybrid cotton in early April, with two rows per bed.
