Even during the Cultural Revolution, he published a paper titled "Male Infertility of Rice," challenging the belief that rice hybridization had no advantages.
Despite hardships, he found support from his wife, who stood by him through tough times. He worked tirelessly, traveling to Hainan every Winter to breed new varieties. His dedication led to the successful development of hybrid rice, increasing yields from 300 kg to 500 kg per mu.
After hybrid rice, Yuan Longping turned his attention to "super rice"—a new generation with higher yield, better quality, and stronger resistance to pests and diseases. His work continues to inspire researchers worldwide. Today, China leads in agricultural biotechnology, thanks in part to his pioneering efforts.
