Chinese scientists find that "slimming protein" is derived from common plants

At the moment, I’m thinking about food, but I can’t ignore the growing concerns about obesity and its hidden dangers. However, a breakthrough might soon change that. A newly discovered natural compound could potentially help people manage weight without the need for strict dieting or exercise. According to a report by *The Morning Post*, researchers from the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have made a groundbreaking discovery. Scientists Shi Qilin and Shi Xianglin from the Institute of Nutritional Science and Research have identified a natural small molecule compound that shows promise in preventing and treating obesity. This compound may eventually be used in functional foods or pharmaceuticals targeting obesity and related conditions. What makes this discovery so exciting is that it doesn’t require any dietary restrictions. In experiments conducted by researcher Yan Qiqi, two groups of mice were tested—one was given a high-fat diet normally, while the other received the compound first. After being fed the same high-fat diet, the first group gained significant weight, while the second group remained slim. Interestingly, the mice taking the compound didn’t show reduced appetite or any signs of discomfort. Their food intake was comparable to the control group, yet they stayed lean. This suggests that the compound works internally to break down fat rather than suppressing hunger, which makes it highly promising for real-world applications. The key lies in a protein called Sirt1, found in fat tissue. It plays a role in inhibiting fat cell production and promoting fat breakdown. Researchers believe this is the first time Sirt1 has been considered as a target for combating obesity. As one scientist explained, “This compound acts like a ‘slimming protein.’ When it enters the body, it triggers a process similar to what happens during physical activity. Even if you’re not moving, your body starts burning fat.” So, what exactly is this compound? According to the report, it’s derived from common plants. Scientists spent nearly two years screening and testing it before confirming its effectiveness. However, the research is still under patent protection, so the exact identity of the compound hasn’t been disclosed yet. While it’s too early to say when this will reach the market, the potential impact on public health is enormous. If successful, this natural compound could offer a safer and more sustainable solution to the global obesity crisis.
