Israeli researchers studied 300 children between the ages of 1 and 5, when the children had caught a cold and lasted for several days. The researchers gave one child a teaspoon (10 grams) of honey to one child and one teaspoon of syrup to other children, but the children did not know. The results showed that children who drank honey had generally improved their cold symptoms and had improved cough and sleep quality. The results have been published in the scientific journal Pediatrics. The honeys used in the study were: banyan honey, citrus honey, vanilla honey such as lavender or rosemary honey.
In response, Dr. Ian Paul, a pediatrician at Pennsylvania State University, pointed out that honey is rich in antioxidants that can help fight infections caused by colds. In addition, the thicker the honey, the richer its antioxidant composition. For the antitussive effect of honey, Dr. Paul explained that honey's stickiness, sweetness, and high concentration can increase the secretion of saliva and help phlegm and lubricate the respiratory tract.
However, experts also reminded that although honey is good, it can't be taken by children of any age. Children under one year of age should avoid drinking honey because they do not yet have enough immunity against possible small amounts of Botox.
