Species name: Ji Fengli
Scientific name: Cryptanthus acaulis
Common names: Crab Ye Ji Feng pear, Purple Kam Feng pear
Family: Bromeliaceae
Native Habitat: Ji Fengli is originally from the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Brazil. It thrives in the humid and shaded conditions of virgin forests. In China, it is commonly found as a potted plant in southern regions.
Growth Conditions:
This plant prefers warm temperatures, with an ideal range of 20°C to 30°C during summer. In winter, it should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C. It requires high humidity, ideally between 60% and 70%, and prefers a semi-shaded, moist environment. Direct sunlight can harm it, so it should be placed in a location with indirect light. It does not tolerate waterlogging or drought, and requires well-draining, loose, and nutrient-rich soil.
Interestingly, although it is a terrestrial plant, it has evolutionary links to aquatic species like duckweed and lilies. This makes it possible to grow it hydroponically, provided that the nutrient solution maintains proper dissolved oxygen levels—this is crucial for successful hydroponic cultivation. Additionally, hydroponic systems must follow strict no-pollution and aseptic growing practices.
Morphological Features:
Ji Fengli is an evergreen perennial with a thick rhizome underground and very little above-ground stem. Its leaves are densely clustered in rosettes, with wavy edges and soft spines. The leaves are leathery, with a green-brown surface and a white underside. Flowers are white, bisexual, and appear in small clusters. The plant is known for its vibrant colors and compact form, making it ideal for desktops, windowsills, and other indoor spaces.
Varieties:
- Xie Ji Ji Feng Pear (also called Xiaohua Ji Feng Pear): Leaves are long and lance-shaped, with green-brown color and pale green stripes. Small white flowers emerge from the leaf clusters.
- Two-colored Jifeng Pineapple (Double-banded Ji Fengli): Leaves feature striking red and yellow vertical stripes.
- Tiger-bordered Bromeliad Pear: Leaves have red, yellow, and white transverse stripes, resembling tiger patterns.
- Hongye Ji Feng Pear: Short, reddish-yellow or reddish-brown leaves.
Uses: Ji Fengli is widely appreciated for its ornamental value. It is an excellent indoor foliage plant, often used in bonsai arrangements, potted displays, and hanging baskets. It also works well in outdoor rock gardens or on shelves. With its unique shape and vivid colors, it adds beauty and greenery to any space, making it a popular choice for both residential and commercial decoration.
