The scientific name of this insect is *Agriotes fuscicollis* Miwa, previously known as *A. subvittatus* Motschulsky. It belongs to the order Coleoptera and family Pyralidae. Common names include "fine-breasted cormorant," "thin-breasted head," and "earthworms." This species is found across a wide range in China, from the northern regions of Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, all the way down to Fujian, Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Yunnan.
This pest shares similar host plants and damage patterns with other dung beetles, primarily affecting crops and grasslands by feeding on roots and underground parts of plants, which can lead to stunted growth or even plant death.
In terms of morphology, the final instar larvae are approximately 32 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, with a slender, cylindrical shape. Their coloration is pale yellow with a light hue. The head is flat, and the mouthparts are dark brown. The first thoracic segment is slightly shorter than the second and third segments. The abdominal segments 1 through 8 are roughly equal in length, tapering toward the end. On each side of the base, there is one round brown spot and four vertical brown lines, with a small rounded protrusion at the top.
Regarding its life habits, this species is mainly distributed in northern China, with one generation per year in the northeastern region. Adults emerge in mid to late June, showing strong activity and tending to gather in decaying grasses. The peak egg-laying period occurs from late June to early July, with eggs laid in the topsoil. In Keshan, Heilongjiang, the egg development period lasts between 8 to 21 days. Larvae prefer moist, slightly acidic soils. Damage is most severe when the soil temperature at 10 cm depth reaches 7–13°C, typically around mid-May. As the soil temperature rises to 17°C in mid-July, their feeding activity gradually decreases.
For prevention and control, measures used against the northeastern giant blackbird can be applied. During field surveys, if the adult population reaches 1.5 per square meter, it's time to implement control strategies such as cultural practices, biological control, or targeted pesticide application to reduce infestation levels and protect crops effectively.
