Species Name: Ji Fengli

Scientific Name: Cryptanthus acaulis

Common Names: Crab Ye Ji Feng Pear, Purple Kam Feng Pear

Family: Bromeliaceae

Native Habitat: Originating from the tropical regions of South America, particularly in the virgin forests of Brazil.

Cultivation: Often found as potted plants in southern China.

Growth Requirements:

Ji Fengli thrives best in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C during summer, and should not drop below 10°C in winter. It prefers a humidity level of 60% to 70%. This plant enjoys warm, humid conditions and partial shade, avoiding direct sunlight. It is sensitive to overwatering and drought, and requires well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter.

Although it is a terrestrial plant, some research suggests that its ancestors may have had aquatic traits, which opens up possibilities for hydroponic cultivation. For successful hydroponics, maintaining proper dissolved oxygen levels in the nutrient solution is essential. Additionally, the system must be clean and free from contamination to ensure healthy growth.

Morphological Features:

Ji Fengli is an evergreen perennial with a thick rhizome underground and very little above-ground stem. Its leaves are densely clustered in rosettes, hard with wavy edges and soft spines. The leaves are leathery, with a green-brown surface and white on the underside. Flowers are white, bisexual, and appear in a rosette-like inflorescence. This plant is known for its vibrant colors and compact shape, making it ideal for desktops, windowsills, and other indoor spaces.

Varieties:

- Xie Ji Ji Fengli (Small-flowered Ji Fengli): Leaves are long and lance-shaped with pale green stripes and small white flowers.

- Two-colored Ji Fengli: Features green leaves with red and yellow vertical stripes.

- Tiger-bordered Bromeliad: Leaves have red, yellow, and white horizontal stripes resembling tiger patterns.

- Hongye Ji Fengli: Short leaves with reddish-yellow or reddish-brown coloration.

Uses: Ji Fengli is widely used for ornamental purposes, serving as an excellent indoor foliage plant. It can be incorporated into bonsai arrangements, potted displays, or even hung indoors. It is also suitable for outdoor rock gardens and decorative planters. As a low-maintenance and visually appealing plant, it is a great choice for adding greenery and beauty to both indoor and outdoor spaces.
