How to prevent and treat the breast-worm

Scientific name: Agriotes fuscicollis Miwa, previously known as A. subvittatus Motschulsky, belongs to the order Coleoptera and family Pyralidae. Common names include "fine-breasted cormorant," "thin-breasted head," and "earthworms." This species is distributed across northern China, ranging from Heilongjiang in the north, through Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, down to Fujian, Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Yunnan in the south.

The pest primarily affects the same host plants as other dung beetles, causing damage by feeding on roots and underground parts of plants, which can lead to stunted growth or even plant death in severe cases.

Morphologically, the final instar larvae measure approximately 32 mm in length and 1.5 mm in width, with a slender, cylindrical body that is pale yellow in color. The head is flat, and the mouthparts are dark brown. The first thoracic segment is slightly shorter than the second and third segments. The abdominal segments 1 through 8 are roughly equal in length, with the tail end being conical. On the base of the body, there is one brown circular spot and four vertical brown lines on each side, along with a small rounded protrusion at the top.

Ecologically, this species is commonly found in northern China, completing one life cycle annually in the northeastern region. Adults emerge in mid to late June, showing strong activity and often gathering in decaying grasses. The peak egg-laying period occurs from late June to early July, with eggs laid in the topsoil. In Keshan, Heilongjiang, the egg development period lasts between 8 to 21 days. Larvae prefer moist and slightly acidic soils, and they become most active when the soil temperature reaches 7–13°C around May. Damage is most severe during this time, but it gradually decreases when the soil temperature rises to 17°C in mid-July.

For prevention and control, methods used for the northeastern giant blackbird (another similar pest) can be applied. During field surveys, if adult populations reach 1.5 per square meter, immediate control measures should be taken to prevent further infestation and crop damage.
