Google and Biogen collaborate to study the progression of multiple sclerosis using biosensors

Release date: 2015-01-30

Bloomberg recently reported that Biogen Idec worked with Google X to investigate how external factors influence the progression of multiple sclerosis. Google and Biogen will use sensors, software and data analysis tools to collect and analyze data from patients with multiple sclerosis. The goal of both companies is to explore the causes of differences in progression in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Bloomberg pointed out that Biogen used digital tools for medical research in the past. Last month, Biogen announced the use of Fitbit activity tracking devices for data on multiple sclerosis patients. It distributes 250 Fitbit wristbands to participants to track their activity levels and sleep patterns. Last summer, the drug company worked with the Cleveland Clinic to develop an iPad app to evaluate MS progress.

Recently, Biogen hired Naomi Fred, chief innovation officer at Boston Children's Hospital, as the company's vice president, chief medical information, innovation and external relations. In 2010, Fred created the Innovation Acceleration Program, which made Boston Children's Hospital a pioneer in the use of medical technology. Its focus at Biogen is on specific diseases such as multiple sclerosis and hemophilia.

Last year, Google Inc. moved a lot in the digital health arena. It works with Novartis to allow pharmaceutical companies to use Google Glass. In January last year, Google announced a non-invasive method to measure the blood sugar of people with diabetes. A month later, Google announced its Google baseline study, integrating genetic testing technology and digital medical sensors to collect baseline data for healthy people.

The two most recent Google plans are cancer scanning pills and genome databases. Last month Google announced the Google genome, which can store human genomes in its secure cloud at a cost of $25 a year.
