Urea is commonly used as a nitrogen source in ruminant diets, particularly for cattle and sheep. Once ingested, it is broken down into ammonia by microorganisms in the rumen, which can then be used to synthesize microbial proteins. These proteins are later absorbed and utilized by the animal, making urea an effective substitute for some traditional protein sources. However, urea itself is not a true protein, and its effectiveness depends on several factors, including the overall crude protein content of the feed.
It's important to note that if the feed already contains high levels of crude protein, the efficiency of urea utilization tends to decrease. Studies have shown that when the crude protein content in the diet is between 9% and 10%, urea can be utilized up to 70% in the rumen, significantly improving weight gain in sheep and cattle—by more than 36% in some cases. However, as the crude protein level increases beyond this range, the benefits of adding urea diminish, and in some cases, it may even lead to reduced weight gain or weight loss.
During winter and spring, many farmers rely on low-quality feeds such as dry corn, hay, and straw, which typically contain crude protein levels between 9% and 11%. In these conditions, supplementing with urea can greatly enhance performance. On the other hand, during summer, when livestock have access to green forages, the crude protein content in these feeds often ranges from 12% to 20%, with high digestibility (over 70%). In such cases, adding urea may actually be counterproductive, as the animals are already receiving sufficient nitrogen from the forage.
Therefore, the decision to use urea should be based on the nutritional profile of the feed. Farmers should carefully evaluate the protein content and adjust urea supplementation accordingly to maximize benefits while avoiding potential negative effects.
