1. Long-term overloading of tractors places excessive stress on tires, increasing the slip rate and causing faster wear. When tire pressures on both sides differ significantly, the tire with lower pressure will wear more quickly, and in some cases, the tire may even "eat" into the other one, leading to rapid deterioration.
Prevention: Ensure that tire pressure meets the manufacturer's specifications. In hot weather, it can be slightly reduced, but not below the minimum recommended level. If the pressure is too high, the tire plies can stretch excessively, leading to fatigue or even failure. If the pressure is too low, the plies may wrinkle and deform, causing the rubber to separate from the structure and accelerating aging and wear. Therefore, avoid long-term overloading to reduce tire slippage and wear.
2. Unequal trailer traction tripods on tractor trailers can cause uneven tire wear. If the difference in the tripod's alignment exceeds 60mm, the larger tires on the short-shoulder side will experience accelerated wear, reducing their lifespan by up to half. The tires on that side of the trailer will also wear more rapidly.
Control method: Measure the distance from the center of the tripod pin hole to the center of the two front wheels on the trailer. These distances should be equal. If they are not, identify and correct the issue. In some cases, a new, properly aligned isosceles tripod may need to be fabricated.
3. Unequal wheelbases on the left and right sides of the tractor’s front and rear wheels can lead to uneven tire wear. Except for the front tire on the shorter wheelbase side, all other tires may experience abnormal wear.
Control methods: Check the wheelbase on both sides by adjusting the front wheels and comparing the shortest distances between the outer edges of the front and rear wheel rims. If the wheelbases are unequal, investigate the cause. Common issues include bent knuckle brackets, knuckle shafts, front axles, or main axles. These components may need to be removed, corrected, or replaced to restore equal wheelbases on both sides.
4. Resonance within the tractor unit can accelerate large tire wear. If the first three issues have been ruled out and abnormal wear—such as irregular patterns on the right tire—still occurs, it may be due to resonance. At this point, the driver should simply adjust the throttle position and avoid the speed range that causes the unit to resonate. Once the resonance is eliminated, the tire wear should improve significantly.
