Summer turtles pay attention to

Every year, from April to May, the temperature gradually rises, which leads to increased turtle activity, stronger appetites, and faster growth. The way turtles are managed during the summer plays a crucial role in their overall health and profitability. For commercial turtle farming, this period directly affects the quality of the final product. For those preparing turtles for breeding, it's a critical phase that determines future success. Due to the unpredictable weather in summer, several key factors need attention: 1. **Maintain Clean Water Quality** Summer brings high temperatures, and turtles become more active, eating more and spending more time in water. This increases waste and leftover food, which can quickly pollute the pond. If not regularly changed, the water can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, endangering the turtles' health. It’s important to replace the water frequently based on the number of turtles and pond size. Before changing the water, disinfect the pond with potassium permanganate to reduce the risk of infections. Good water should be clear, odorless, with a visibility of around 30 cm and a light green color. 2. **Improve Feeding Practices** In hot weather, feed can spoil quickly, especially frozen food. To prevent this, always use fresh and high-quality feed, and avoid overfeeding. Stick to a regular feeding schedule—feeding at fixed times, places, and quantities helps promote healthy growth. Avoid using single types of feed; instead, rotate different foods to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed should be given after the turtles have had time to settle, minimizing stress. Leftover food and utensils must be cleaned up promptly to keep the environment healthy. 3. **Prevent Disease Outbreaks** Maintaining cleanliness is essential. Regularly clean the pond, feed containers, and the turtles themselves. Any abnormal or sick turtles should be isolated and treated immediately. Healthy turtles should be disinfected weekly by soaking them in a 40ppm potassium permanganate solution for 20–30 minutes. In summer, turtles are prone to digestive issues, so adding small amounts of antibiotics or herbal detoxifiers to their diet can help prevent illness. 4. **Control Temperature for Optimal Growth** Turtles grow best between 28°C and 31°C. However, when the temperature exceeds 35°C, it becomes stressful. Ensure turtles get at least two hours of sunlight daily but avoid direct exposure to intense heat. When the water temperature goes above 32°C, take steps to cool the pond, such as installing shade nets or adding water plants to block sunlight. By focusing on these four areas—water quality, feeding, disease prevention, and temperature control—you can significantly improve the health and growth of your turtles during the critical summer months.
