Every year, from April to May, temperatures gradually rise, leading to increased turtle activity, stronger appetites, and faster growth. The way turtles are managed during the summer plays a crucial role in their overall health and profitability. For commercial breeding, it directly affects the quality of the turtles produced, while for those preparing turtles for sale, this period is a critical phase that determines success.
Due to the unpredictable weather in summer, several key factors need attention:
1. **Maintain Clean Water Quality**
Summer brings high temperatures, which increase turtle activity and feeding frequency. As they spend more time in water, waste accumulation and leftover food can quickly pollute the pond. If not regularly refreshed, the water becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, risking turtle health. Therefore, regular water changes are essential. The frequency depends on the number of turtles and the size of the pond. Before replacing the water, disinfect the pond with potassium permanganate to reduce bacterial growth. Ideal water conditions include being odorless, clear, with visibility around 30 cm and a light green color.
2. **Improve Feeding Practices**
In hot weather, feed spoils more easily, especially frozen food. It's important to provide fresh, high-quality food and feed at regular intervals. Stick to a consistent schedule—feeding at fixed times, places, and portions. This helps promote healthy development. Avoid feeding the same type of food all the time; alternate between different feeds to ensure balanced nutrition. Also, avoid early feeding to minimize disturbances. Leftover food and utensils should be removed promptly to maintain hygiene.
3. **Prevent Diseases Effectively**
Keep the turtle environment clean, including the water, feed, and feeding tools. Any abnormal turtles should be isolated and treated. Healthy turtles should be disinfected weekly using a 40ppm potassium permanganate solution for 20–30 minutes. In summer, turtles are prone to digestive issues. Along with cleanliness, adding small amounts of antibiotics or herbal detoxifiers can help prevent illness.
4. **Regulate Temperature Properly**
Turtles grow best between 28°C and 31°C. However, when the temperature exceeds 35°C, it becomes stressful. Ensure turtles get at least 2 hours of sunlight daily but avoid direct exposure to intense sun. When the water temperature goes above 32°C, take action to cool down the pond—such as using shade nets or adding water lilies to block sunlight. These steps help maintain a comfortable and safe environment for your turtles.
