1. Prolonged overloading of tractors puts excessive stress on tires, increasing the slip rate and accelerating tire wear. When the air pressure on both sides of the tires is uneven, especially when there's a significant difference, the tire with lower pressure will wear out more quickly, leading to faster degradation. This imbalance can cause uneven contact with the ground, worsening tire performance and reducing their lifespan.
Prevention: Ensure that tire pressure meets the manufacturer’s specifications. During hot seasons, it may be slightly lower, but not below the minimum recommended value. Overinflated tires stretch the plies excessively, causing fatigue or even rupture, while underinflated tires lead to excessive wrinkling and deformation, which can cause the rubber layer to separate from the plies, speeding up aging and wear. Therefore, avoid long-term overloading of the tractor to minimize tire slippage and wear.
2. Unequal trailer hitch tripod arms on tractor-trailer combinations can cause uneven tire wear. If the difference in the length of the trailer tripod exceeds 60mm, the larger tires on one side will experience significantly increased wear, shortening their service life by up to half. The tires on that side will also suffer accelerated wear due to the imbalance.
Control: Measure the distance from the center of the tripod pin hole to the center of each front wheel on the trailer. These two distances should be equal. If they are not, identify and correct the issue. In some cases, an isosceles tripod may need to be reinstalled to ensure balance and reduce tire wear.
3. Unequal wheelbases on the left and right sides of the tractor’s front and rear wheels can lead to tire wear. If the front wheel on the shorter wheelbase side is misaligned, it can cause wear on all four tires, particularly the other three.
Control: Check the wheelbase by aligning the front wheels and comparing the shortest distances between the outer edges of the front and rear wheels. If the measurements are unequal, investigate the cause. Common issues include bent knuckle brackets, knuckle shafts, front axles, or big axles. Correct or replace the faulty components to restore equal wheelbases on both sides.
4. Resonance within the tractor unit can accelerate large tire wear. If no issues are found in the previous three areas, and abnormal wear occurs on the right tire—such as irregular patterns or uneven tread loss—it may be due to resonance. In this case, the driver should simply adjust the throttle position and avoid the speed range that causes the unit to resonate. Once the resonance is avoided, the tire wear should gradually improve, and the tires should return to normal performance.
