1. Is it really that easy to raise pigs? What kind of technology is not necessary?
Currently, pig farming in China is still mainly carried out by individual households, and many large-scale farms started from small or professional operations. Due to traditional beliefs, some farm owners think: "Raising pigs is simple—anyone can do it without any special skills." However, after working for a while or facing some challenges, they realize that large-scale pig farming is far more complex than they initially thought. It requires proper knowledge, management, and technology.
2. Can someone with animal husbandry and veterinary experience be a production manager?
Many farm owners now understand the importance of having professionals in charge. But what defines an expert? A true expert is someone who understands the standardization and efficiency of large-scale pig farming. Where can such talent be found? They are usually found in established large-scale farms. Can local veterinary stations handle this role? The answer is no. A good farmer’s field is built through hands-on experience from real large-scale operations.
3. Can breeders have no education?
To save costs, some large-scale farm owners hire uneducated or elderly workers as breeders. These individuals often lack the training needed to perform well. A low-quality breeder can significantly affect productivity. In fact, hiring a graduate from an agricultural university may cost about 200 yuan more than a regular worker. But I've always believed that in the field I managed, college students made up a quarter of the team, with most team leaders and supervisors being educated professionals.
4. Where should a pig farm be built?
Many people with capital want to start a pig farm but just look for a place to build it. Unfortunately, many farms are located too close to villages, towns, highways, or markets. This makes disease prevention difficult, leading to frequent outbreaks of illness.
5. Can pigs be raised with poor facilities?
Some farms still lack basic infrastructure—no farrowing beds, no thermal mats, no incubators, no designated areas for pregnant sows, and no disinfection equipment. These farms remain small or poorly managed, which limits their success.
6. Should the production process be designed before building the site?
It's common for some farms to start operations without knowing how many sows they can manage or how the production flow will work. After starting, they discover that there aren't enough farrowing rooms or housing space, leading to costly changes and wasted money.
7. Can’t you go all-in and all-out?
In my view, any farm with over 300 breeding sows must have a delivery room and nursery. All older farms that can't implement full turnover must be renovated. This is essential! All-in and all-out is the foundation of large-scale pig farming. Without it, disease control and production processes become impossible.
8. Is lower cost better for higher profit?
Due to the mindset of small-scale farmers, many large-scale farm owners try to cut costs by buying the cheapest feed, vaccines, and labor. They believe lower costs mean higher profits. However, compared to free-range pigs, large-scale farming requires high input for high returns. Of course, I don’t support unnecessary extravagance, but we must consider China’s reality. Pig farming is a low-margin industry.
9. No disease means no medicine?
Large-scale pig farming requires attention to animal health. With today’s complex diseases, prevention and proper medication are crucial. Illnesses need treatment, but even healthy animals require preventive measures. Prevention is the main strategy, and treatment is just a supplement. Everyone knows this, yet it's often ignored.
10. Are pig diseases more important than feeding and management?
With more complicated diseases in recent years, many farms have failed, creating a wrong impression: focusing on disease control rather than management. At many pig farming conferences, the focus is almost entirely on diseases. However, most pig diseases are actually management issues. Even though I studied veterinary science, I always emphasize feeding and management in my reports and trainings. Good feeding and management lead to healthy pigs, and many diseases simply disappear.
