"If you've been driving a tractor for over 10 years, you end up repairing it several times a year and dealing with countless spare parts. It's frustrating because the market is so chaotic," said Chen Guilin, an agricultural farmer from Anhui Province, while discussing maintenance challenges.
"Parts like pistons, valves, tubing, bearings, and rubber belts directly affect the safety and reliability of the entire machine. Farmers want to know exactly what they're buying," added Zhang Quanfa, a farmer from Sichuan.
The agricultural machinery spare parts market is vast, including engine components, tractors, combine harvesters, chassis parts, farming tools, and more—over 10,000 different items in total. However, when reporters visited rural areas in Anhui and Sichuan, they found most parts came from small roadside workshops or unregistered stores. Many products lacked proper certifications, manuals, or even basic technical standards.
Farmers face major issues with poor quality parts and unreliable after-sales service. Ma Mou, a farmer from Anhui, shared his frustration: "My tractor’s rear axle broke, but there were no local repair shops available. I had to send the part back to the manufacturer, and after just six months, it broke again."
Some manuals are unclear, leading farmers to misuse equipment and increase repair costs. For example, some machines have engines that run too fast, and farmers are misled into overloading or overspeeding, causing damage to frames, axles, and even dangerous rollover accidents. One case involved a small four-wheel vehicle rated for 0.5 tons being overloaded with 3–4 tons, resulting in repeated axle failures.
Reporters discovered that certain parts, like spline shafts, rotary knives, hammers, and valves, are especially prone to quality issues. In rural areas, many parts are shoddy, often made from recycled scrap metal or old railway tracks. Some manufacturers use outdated materials, and others produce low-quality replacements, such as repurposed atmospheric doors for small valves meant for repairs.
Industry insiders revealed that some manufacturers send qualified parts to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) but sell substandard ones on the open market. Small workshops often lack proper facilities, and workers are usually seasonal laborers who may not understand quality standards. Heat treatment, for instance, is sometimes skipped, and parts are labeled without proper inspection.
In addition, non-standard "three guarantees" policies (repair, replacement, and refund) cause confusion. Many companies set their own terms, ranging from three months to a year, and some refuse to honor the policy for consumables or rubber parts. Tractor tires, for example, are often only covered for a few months.
Farmers often don’t understand these policies and miss deadlines, leaving them responsible for costly repairs. During repairs, operators may not fill out the required documentation, or they might tear it up afterward, leaving farmers without proof. Some even demand signatures before repairs, refusing to fix the issue if the farmer signs first.
Worn-out pistons and crankshafts, along with oil leaks, are common problems. Farmers express their desire not only for reliable machines but also for high-quality, standardized spare parts. "We want good machines and trustworthy accessories," they say.
