The newly hatched Aberdeen oysters still have their umbilical cords attached and the yolk sacs are not fully absorbed. It is recommended to keep them in the hatchery for at least one day before moving them, as rushing the process could lead to high mortality rates. On the first day after hatching, the larvae are transferred into plastic containers for acclimation. These pots are filled with 3 cm of water and covered with fine sand. Each pot holds approximately 100 larvae, and feeding begins daily at 9:00 PM. The feed is mixed with water while changing the water to maintain cleanliness. After three days of consistent feeding, the oysters adapt well to their environment and are ready to enter the cultivation phase.
There are two main methods of cultivation:
1. **Cement Pond Cultivation**: Each cement pond covers an area of 8–10 square meters with a depth of 1 meter and a water level of 0.3 meters. The bottom is covered with 2–3 cm of fine sand and sloped toward the outlet for efficient drainage. Before use, the pond is disinfected twice with quicklime or potassium permanganate, using about 70–100 grams per square meter. Every seven days, the oysters are fed either live plankton or a prepared diet. Each feeding should be 10% of their body weight, and it's also recommended to add 5% fish oil along with milk powder, vitamin C, and E. The mixture is stirred with water and then placed on feeding tables. After six hours, the uneaten food is removed, and the water is changed to ensure good water quality. Disinfection with lime or bleach is done every 7–10 days to prevent disease. Shade nets and aquatic plants like water peanuts and artificial daffodils are added to help reduce heat stress and improve water clarity. After 30 days of cultivation, the juvenile clams typically weigh between 10–15 grams and can be moved to earthen ponds for further growth. The survival rate is usually around 95%, and they grow quickly, often reaching over 500 grams within the same year, making them suitable for market sale.
2. **Earthen Pond Cultivation**: The earthen pond should not be too large, ideally around 5 mu (approximately 3,333 square meters). After cleaning and disinfecting using standard procedures, a small 200-square-meter section is enclosed with bamboo poles in one corner. Stocking density is about 30–50 seedlings per square meter, and feeding and management follow similar practices as in cement ponds. Since young oysters are more adaptable to natural conditions, stocking densities can be lower, which helps them grow faster. However, it's crucial to protect them from predators such as water snakes and rats. Prevention measures include clearing weeds around the pond and applying lime in a circle around the edges to deter rodents. Additionally, electric wires can be installed around the pond and activated at night, which is effective in keeping pests away, though safety precautions must be taken to avoid accidents.
