1. Due to their sensitivity to dampness, turkey enclosures should be built in sunny areas of Gaoshuang, ensuring warmth in winter and coolness in summer. A bamboo framework should be installed inside the house to provide shelter for the turkeys. To prevent moisture-related issues, especially around the chest area, fresh wood shavings or sedge mats can be used as bedding material.
2. Female turkeys are raised and managed for 8 weeks before entering the rearing phase at 10 weeks old. During this period, the energy content of their feed should be increased appropriately. The main diet should consist of plant-based feeds rich in carbohydrates, such as grains, while protein levels should be reduced to around 15% to 18%. Adult turkeys can be fed compound feeds, and if available, higher-quality feeds can be provided freely. They can also be given green vegetables, although this may slow their growth. However, turkeys enjoy certain aromatic plants like garlic and leeks, which can improve their appetite and help prevent diseases when included in their diet.
If grazing is possible, turkeys can be allowed to graze during the day and fed at night. In captivity, feeding should occur 3 to 4 times daily, with 1% to 2% gravel added to the feed to aid digestion in their gizzard. Turkeys should also have 1 to 2 hours of outdoor activity each day. Since turkeys are social and easily frightened, it's important to keep them in groups while grazing. Maintain a calm environment during feeding and grazing to avoid stress, which can affect their eating and egg-laying behavior. Clean drinking water must always be available, along with sufficient lighting. Regular cleaning and disinfection of the turkey house is essential, with waste removed promptly to maintain hygiene and prevent disease outbreaks.
