1. Due to turkeys' sensitivity to dampness, their pens should be constructed in a sunny area of Gaoshuang. This ensures warmth in winter and cooling in summer. A bamboo framework should be installed inside the house to provide perching space for the turkeys. To prevent moisture-related issues, especially in the chest area, fresh wood shavings or sedge mats can be used as bedding material.
2. Female turkeys are raised and managed for 8 weeks before entering the rearing phase at 10 weeks old. During this period, the energy content of their feed should be increased appropriately. The main diet should consist of plant-based feeds rich in carbohydrates, such as grains, while protein levels should be reduced to around 15% to 18%. For adult turkeys, commercial compound feeds can be provided freely, or a mix of green vegetables can be offered. However, growth may be slower when relying solely on vegetables. Turkeys enjoy certain aromatic plants like garlic and leeks, which can stimulate appetite and help prevent diseases when included in their feed. If possible, allow them to graze on grasslands during the day and feed at night. In confined settings, feed them 3 to 4 times daily, adding 1% to 2% gravel to aid digestion. Also, ensure they have 1 to 2 hours of outdoor activity each day.
Turkeys are social and easily frightened animals, so it's important to keep them in groups while grazing. Maintain a calm environment during feeding and grazing to avoid stress, which can affect their eating habits and egg production. Provide clean drinking water at all times and ensure sufficient lighting in the turkey house. Regular cleaning and disinfection are essential to maintain hygiene, and droppings should be removed promptly to prevent disease spread.
