Using artificial intelligence to prevent patient stroke, medical startup AliveCor received $30 million in financing

Release date: 2017-06-09

AliveCor is a digital medical start-up from the United States, established in 2011 to provide products and services to users with poor heart function.

Recently, the company announced that it has completed a round of financing of US$30 million, which is funded by Japanese health care company Omron Healthcare and the US non-profit Mayo Clinic.

In addition, the company has launched a new platform called KardiaPro that uses artificial intelligence to help doctors prevent patient strokes.

Previously, the company had approved a FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval for a mobile app called Kardia and an accompanying ECG measurement device ($99).

Last year, the company teamed up with Mayo Hospital to conduct a stroke study on 4,500 patients. As a research product, this new platform is aimed at doctors to help them monitor the electrocardiogram of people who may have a stroke or may have other heart diseases.

According to company CEO Vic Gundotra, KardiaPro tracks patient weight, daily activities and blood pressure, and uses its own artificial intelligence technology to sort and compare to identify potential risk factors that doctors have not detected. Subsequently, it will put all of this information into the patient's personal health file, in order to automatically warn the doctor in an emergency, to help them decide the next diagnosis.

Previously, the company had received $13.5 million in financing from Qualcomm, Silicon Valley-based investment company Khosla Ventures, and life sciences investment bank Burrill. After this round of financing, the company's total financing will reach 45.4 million US dollars.

Not only that, but the company has deepened its partnership with a number of medical institutions, has direct access to millions of patients, and has obtained a lot of real data for scientific research. Among them, especially worth mentioning is Omron. Because we all know that it is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of sphygmomanometers, and plays a pivotal role in the health care industry.

At present, heart disease can be said to be the number one killer of human health. In this case, the blood pressure monitoring and electrocardiogram services provided by AliveCor are of great significance. It detects potential pathogenic factors as early as possible and successfully prevents high blood pressure and stroke.

Finally, in addition to financing and new platforms, the company has developed a new ECG wristband for Apple Watch. At present, this product has officially entered the European market, but it still needs FDA review in the United States.
