Bullfrogs are cold-blooded animals that hibernate for about 3 to 4 months annually. They can be farmed in vegetable greenhouses, which provide a controlled environment for their growth and development. The ideal greenhouse area is between 1 to 2 mu (approximately 667 to 1,334 square meters). These greenhouses are typically arched and oriented east-west, covered with double-layer non-drip plastic film to maximize light penetration and insulation. Inside, celery is planted, and a well or access to tap water is essential for maintaining water quality.
To create a suitable microclimate, straw or dried grass is used as a bedding material. Every day at 4 p.m., the grass is spread on top of the greenhouse structure, and it is removed at 9 a.m. the next morning to allow sunlight to enter. This practice helps regulate temperature. On cloudy days, the grass can remain in place to prevent the internal temperature from dropping too low.
The frog pond, also known as the pro-frog pool, should be around 20 square meters in size, located at the center of the greenhouse. It should be 1.5 meters deep with a slope of 1:2.5 to ensure proper drainage and water circulation. Water plants such as water peanuts and water hyacinth are introduced into the pond. Two weeks before stocking the frogs, the pond is disinfected using 2010-6 bleaching solution to eliminate harmful pathogens.
A separate hatching pool, measuring 4 square meters and 0.6 meters deep, is placed adjacent to the spawning pond. This area is crucial for breeding and raising tadpoles. For commercial farming, adult bullfrogs weighing approximately 500 grams, aged two years or older, and sexually mature are selected as broodstock. About 10 groups per acre are stocked, with an equal ratio of males to females (1:1).
Frogs are introduced into the greenhouse when the ambient and water temperatures range between 15°C and 18°C. After the initial feeding period in March, the temperature rises, and the frogs become more active. They are fed twice daily, primarily with extruded pellets, supplemented with small fish, silkworm pupae, and crickets. Food is placed on a feeding tray, and it's recommended to leave a slight surplus to ensure all frogs have enough to eat.
In addition to regular vegetable maintenance, fresh water is frequently added to keep the pond clean. Daily patrols of the ponds are conducted, and environmental conditions are recorded. The frog ponds are periodically disinfected using lime water with a concentration of 10^-6 to maintain hygiene and prevent disease outbreaks. This comprehensive management approach ensures healthy and productive bullfrog farming.
