A new method for breeding and management of bullfrogs in vegetable greenhouses

Bullfrogs are cold-blooded animals that hibernate for about 3 to 4 months each year. They can be farmed in vegetable greenhouses, which offer a controlled environment suitable for their growth and survival. The ideal size for a greenhouse used in bullfrog farming is between 1 to 2 mu (approximately 667 to 1,334 square meters). These greenhouses are typically arched and oriented east-west, with double-layer non-drip plastic film covering the structure to maximize light transmission and insulation. Inside the greenhouse, vegetables like celery are planted, and a well or access to tap water is essential for maintaining water quality. To regulate temperature, farmers use straw or rice husks as insulating materials. Every day at 4 p.m., these materials are placed on top of the greenhouse, and they are removed by 9 a.m. the next morning to allow sunlight to warm the space. On cloudy days, the insulation is left in place to prevent the temperature from dropping too low. The frog pond is constructed in the center of the greenhouse, covering an area of 20 square meters with a depth of 1.5 meters and a slope of 1:2.5 to ensure proper water circulation. Water plants such as water peanuts and water hyacinth are introduced into the pond. Two weeks before stocking the frogs, the pond is disinfected using 2010-6 bleaching solution to eliminate harmful pathogens. A separate hatching pool, measuring 4 square meters and 0.6 meters deep, is located adjacent to the main frog pond. For breeding, adult bullfrogs weighing around 500 grams, aged two years or older, and sexually mature are selected. Ten groups per acre are stocked, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1. Frogs are introduced into the greenhouse when the ambient and water temperatures range between 15°C and 18°C, ensuring optimal conditions for their activity and feeding. After March, when temperatures rise, bullfrogs become more active and feed vigorously. They are fed twice daily, primarily with extruded pellets, supplemented with small fish, silkworm pupae, and cockroaches. Food is placed on a feeding plate, and it's recommended to leave a small amount of food uneaten to avoid overfeeding. In addition to managing the vegetables, regular water changes are necessary to maintain clean and fresh water in the ponds. Farmers conduct daily inspections of the ponds, recording environmental conditions such as temperature, water quality, and frog behavior. The ponds are also regularly disinfected using a lime water solution with a concentration of 10⁻⁶ to prevent disease outbreaks. This comprehensive approach ensures healthy and productive bullfrog farming.
