Every summer, chicken farms are plagued by flies and unpleasant odors, making it a major challenge for farmers. Even with regular cleaning and screen doors, the problem persists, causing discomfort and affecting both the workers and the chickens. To effectively reduce and eliminate flies, it's essential to address the root cause: improving manure management and maintaining cleanliness in the farm.
Here are some practical strategies:
1. **Morning and Evening Manure Removal**: It’s best to clean chicken manure in the early morning before and after feeding. This timing is ideal because the weather is cooler, reducing sweat and mosquito bites. It also gives enough time to process the manure properly. Clearing the manure during this time reduces odor throughout the day, improving both the working environment and the living conditions for the chickens. Additionally, at night, the lower temperature slows down fermentation, minimizing smell. If possible, cleaning twice a day is even better. After clearing, spray a disinfectant like Weiwai brand solution on the area to help reduce fly presence with its strong scent.
2. **Controlling Moisture in Feces**: Fly breeding thrives in manure with 60%–80% moisture. So, managing this is key to controlling the fly population.
- **Wet Soil Sealed Fermentation**: Transport the manure to a designated area, flatten it, and cover with 10 cm of soil. This prevents air from entering and allows internal heat to kill bacteria and parasites. It’s suitable for long-term storage.
- **Plastic Film Sealing**: Cover the manure pile with plastic film and secure the edges with soil or stones to make it airtight. Add fresh manure daily, and if the film is narrow, use multiple layers. If the manure is too wet, mix in some soil. After a few days of fermentation under sunlight, open the film to cool it down. This method can also quickly kill flies when covered. Once dried, the manure can be stored safely.
- **Water Flushing and Fermentation**: In large farms with water systems, flush the chicken house with water in the afternoon to remove manure, directing it into septic tanks. Regularly clean the tanks and mix the waste with soil before sealing it with mud.
- **Biogas Digester Method**: Install a biogas digester in the farm. The manure is processed into biogas for cooking and heating, while the remaining material is odorless and safe for use as fertilizer. This not only controls flies but also provides an energy source.
- **Insecticide Spraying**: Use low-toxicity insecticides to spray inside the chicken house. Apply long-lasting products like pyrethrum on walls to kill flies that land in the treated areas.
- **Dung Pile Spraying**: Apply concentrated pesticides such as trichlorfon or dichlorvos directly onto the manure piles. This targets fly larvae, but care must be taken to avoid exposing free-range chickens to the chemicals.
- **EM Probiotics**: Feed the chickens with EM (Effective Microorganisms) feed or give them EM-based drinks. These microbes break down the odor in the feces, leading to a significant reduction in smell within 10 days. This improves hygiene and helps control flies at the source.
By implementing these methods, farmers can significantly reduce fly infestations and create a healthier, more comfortable environment for both the chickens and the workers.
