How to Raise Healthier Pigs
Pigs are highly susceptible to diseases, and even the healthiest pig can suffer losses once it falls ill. To reduce the risk of disease, many farmers have started using a method involving Golden Retriever pigs raised on a fermented bed. This innovative approach has significantly improved the immunity and overall health of the pigs, making them more resistant to illness.
The fermentation bed is made from sawdust and wood chips, which provide a natural and comfortable environment for the pigs. It stays cool in summer and warm in winter, creating a healthy living space. Additionally, this system helps pigs gain weight faster and reduces the need for frequent cleaning.
To create the bed, a specific mix of sawdust and soil is used, along with an active microbial agent, a small amount of salt, and optional ingredients like rice bran or distiller’s grains. The moisture content is carefully maintained at around 60% to support the growth of beneficial microorganisms. After about a week, the fermentation process begins, and the bed remains clean without needing to be changed annually.
Within a few days, the odor in the pigsty disappears, and the presence of flies and maggots decreases significantly. After 20 to 30 days, the bottom of the bed enters a natural reproduction phase, forming a white mycelium layer in the center. The temperature inside the bed can reach 50°C to 60°C, effectively killing harmful bacteria and pathogens. The surface temperature is kept between 25°C and 30°C, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic environment for the pigs.
This system not only improves the pigs' health but also makes the pigsty cleaner and more pleasant.
