How to prevent potassium deficiency in pear trees

Many farmers have noticed that some pear trees exhibit short internodes, with smaller, yellow-green leaves. The leaf margins curl upward, turn brown, and appear scorched. In severe cases, the entire tree looks as if it has been burned, especially in dry or poor soil conditions. Trees that are bare or have lost most of their leaves show even more severe symptoms, which significantly weaken the tree's vitality and reduce fruit yield. Many growers are confused about what is happening, often suspecting a disease like phytotoxicity or leaf spot. However, this is actually a typical physiological disorder caused by severe potassium deficiency. This issue arises because many orchard owners have been growing crops that require high levels of potassium, such as sweet potatoes, peanuts, and tobacco. While fertilizing, they often focus on nitrogen and phosphate, neglecting to apply enough potash. Over time, this imbalance leads to serious potassium deficiencies in the pear trees. To address this problem, the following steps should be taken: First, apply foliar sprays of a mixture of 0.3% to 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate and urea, two to three times. This helps quickly replenish nutrients and restore the tree’s health. Second, apply top-dressing with quick-acting fertilizers like potassium dihydrogen phosphate and urea, along with long-term compound fertilizers designed for fruit trees. This ensures strong and healthy growth. Third, thin the fruits to reduce the tree’s nutrient load and promote better vegetative development. Finally, change the long-standing practice of planting potassium-demanding crops continuously, and instead implement a more balanced crop rotation system to maintain soil fertility over time. By taking these measures, growers can effectively manage potassium deficiency and improve the overall health and productivity of their pear trees.
