Yakagegi, also known as Yabago vine, is a member of the Yakuraceae family. This climbing plant typically grows to lengths between 2 and 5 meters and features a highly branched structure. Notably, its vines can take root when they touch the ground, making it an excellent choice for ground cover. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, and pointed, resembling those of sweet potatoes. The inflorescences are arranged in terminal panicles, often with large clusters or open flowers. The flowers are cylindrical and bright red, creating a striking contrast against the green foliage, especially during their blooming period from August to September. The fruits are orange in color and ripen from September to October. Native to various provinces and regions south of the Yangtze River, Yakagegi was introduced to the Beijing Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the 1980s. It exhibits strong adaptability, tolerating both cold and drought conditions, and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. This makes it an ideal local vine plant for landscaping purposes. Yakagegi prefers temperatures between 15°C and 30°C and can survive winter conditions in Beijing with proper care. It is widely used for ground cover, effectively suppressing weed growth. Its dense coverage makes it ideal for undergrowth areas. For propagation, seeds can be sown in early March and April, and seedlings can be transplanted in mid-May. Cuttings can be taken at any time of the year. Healthy two-year-old stems are selected, cut into 10–15 cm sections, and placed in a sand bed while kept moist. Roots usually appear within 7 to 15 days, and transplanting is best done in autumn or late spring. When planting for ground cover, a spacing of 40 cm by 20 cm is recommended. Additionally, Yakagegi is suitable for vertical greening on trellises or flower frames. In traditional medicine, the whole plant is used for its properties of removing wind, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, and detoxifying.
