In order to address the key issues in current fertilization practices—such as low organic fertilizer application, excessive nitrogen use, over-application of nitrogen at an early stage, insufficient nutrient supply during the later growth phase, and inadequate attention to zinc fertilizer in zinc-deficient boron soils—scientific fertilization strategies have been developed. These methods integrate both organic and inorganic fertilizers, regulate total nitrogen input, adjust the ratio between base and top-dressing applications, reduce early nitrogen use, and shift some of the nitrogen application to later stages. Additionally, phosphorus and potassium are maintained at consistent levels, while attention is given to addressing trace element deficiencies in plants.
For sowing, a deep placement technique is used through furrows or holes, with soil covering the applied materials immediately after planting. The depth of coverage should be at least 6.7 cm. Top-dressing is also applied to the soil, ensuring that the covering layer is more than 6.7 cm thick. In boron-deficient soils, boron fertilizer is specifically applied.
The recommended organic fertilizer rate is 4,000 kg per mu. For nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium, the application rates vary based on lint yield: if the yield is below 100 kg per hectare, apply 16 kg of nitrogen, 7 kg of phosphate, and 12 kg of potassium. If the yield ranges from 100 to 150 kg per hectare, apply 15 kg of nitrogen, 6 kg of phosphate, and 11 kg of potassium. For yields above 150 kg per hectare, 14 kg of nitrogen, 5.5 kg of phosphate, and 10 kg of potassium per mu are recommended.
Regarding boron fertilizer, it is advised to apply 1 kg per mu in boron-deficient soils. As for the fertilization ratio, the base fertilizer includes 2,000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, along with 30% of total nitrogen and potassium, and 60% of total phosphate. The flower and boll fertilizer consists of 1,000 kg of organic fertilizer, plus 20% of total N, P, and K. The cap top dressing includes 1,000 kg of organic fertilizer, 50% of total nitrogen and potassium, and 20% of total phosphate. This balanced approach ensures optimal nutrient availability throughout the plant's growth cycle.
