Application of Geothermal Line in Northeast China
In the cold regions of Northeast China, greenhouses are commonly used to grow seedlings or vegetables early in the season. Traditionally, these greenhouses rely on coal burning to maintain temperature, which not only increases costs but also causes environmental pollution. However, plants thrive best when soil temperature is properly managed. Yin Guihua, a training cadre from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences and deputy head of Beilin District in Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province, began exploring alternative heating methods. She wondered if geothermal lines could be used instead of coal to warm the soil. These geothermal lines heat the ground from beneath, providing optimal growing conditions with minimal energy use. Moreover, the adjustable temperature feature helps avoid energy waste and reduces overall investment.
On March 25 this year, she visited Langfang Dongfang Cable Co., Ltd., a company known for producing electric heating ground wires. The company generously donated a 20m² heating line to the Beilin District, and the results were impressive. In an open-air experimental field without a greenhouse, soil layers with the heating wire reached 28°C, while the unheated areas only reached 18°C. Inside the greenhouse, the difference was equally noticeable. Crops with electric heating lines showed significantly better root development and stronger above-ground growth compared to the control group. Following this success, the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted its own comparative experiment, arriving at similar conclusions.
Yin Guihua noted that crops grown with the electric heating lines matured 15 days to a month faster than usual. For certain economic crops, time is crucial—every day saved can translate into higher profits. In Heilongjiang, where winters are long, most vegetables during the cold season are imported. But when the soil warms up just enough for planting, the best opportunities are often missed. "The application of the Dongfang Geothermal Line in agriculture, especially for economic crops, has huge potential," she said. She plans to apply for a provincial project to promote this technology on a larger scale.
Langfang Oriental Company reported positive feedback from local farmers, some of whom have already reserved electric heating lines for next year, even after the nursery season. This shows growing interest in adopting this innovative, eco-friendly solution for agricultural production.
