Application of Geothermal Line in Northeast China

In the cold regions of Northeast China, greenhouses are commonly used to grow seedlings or vegetables early in the season. Traditionally, these greenhouses rely on coal burning to maintain warmth, which not only increases costs but also harms the environment. However, plants thrive best when the soil temperature is optimal. Yin Guihua, a training cadre from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences and deputy head of Beilin District in Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province, began exploring an alternative: using geothermal lines to heat the soil instead of burning coal. Geothermal lines, which provide under-soil heating, can create ideal growing conditions with minimal energy use. Their adjustable temperature settings allow for efficient control, reducing energy waste and lowering overall costs. On March 25 this year, Yin discovered Langfang Dongfang Cable Co., Ltd., a company known for producing electric heating ground wires. After the company donated a 20m² heating line to Beilin District, the results were impressive. In an open-air experimental field without a greenhouse, soil layers equipped with the heating wire reached up to 28°C, while the unheated areas remained at just 18°C. The difference inside the greenhouse was equally striking. Crops with electric heating lines showed significantly better root development and stronger above-ground growth compared to those in the control group. Following this success, the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted its own comparative experiment, arriving at similar conclusions. Yin explained, “With electric heating lines, crops grow 15 days to a month faster than usual. For economic crops, time is money.” In Heilongjiang, where winters are long, most vegetables during the cold months come from outside the province. But when the soil becomes warm enough for planting, the best opportunities are often missed. This makes the application of geothermal lines in agriculture, especially for high-value crops, highly promising. She added that the next step is to apply jointly for a provincial project to promote the technology on a larger scale. Meanwhile, Langfang Dongfang Company reported that many farmers have already started reserving electric heating lines for next year, even though the nursery season has passed. This shows strong interest and potential for widespread adoption in the future.
