Australian researchers have recently invented a miniature electrical stimulation device that does not require craniotomy and is delivered to the brain through the venous vessels of the neck. Animal experiments have shown that this device can release current to stimulate the brain for the treatment of neurological diseases such as epilepsy or Parkinson's disease.

Currently in the treatment of neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, one method is to implant electrodes in the brain and stimulate the brain with electric current. But this usually requires drilling holes in the patient's skull and implanting the electrodes into the brain.

The new device, developed by researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia, is about 4 mm in diameter. Experiments with sheep have shown that it can be delivered to the brain through the venous blood vessels in the neck and permanently attached to the blood vessel wall of the brain. The current released by the device stimulates the brain of the sheep and can receive the desired results.

Researchers say that because there have been no precedents for stimulating the human brain through the release of currents from similar devices, more research is needed to explore safety and other issues before conducting human clinical trials.

If things go well, the researchers also plan to use the device implanted in the brain as a brain-computer interface, such as to receive and translate nerve signals, to help patients control wheelchairs and other equipment.
